Honoring her namesake, which means “golden flower”, Anacaona was a beautiful and powerful Taíno princess.

More than that, she was an educated and talented woman who believed in peace and coexistence, ultimately paying for these beliefs with her life.

Perhaps that’s why she’s one of the few indigenous women mentioned by name in the writings from the early years of the conquest of America (15th century).

In his “History of the Indies” (1527-1547), Friar Bartolomé de las Casas described her as “a very notable woman, very prudent, very graceful and palatial in her speech and arts and manners and very friendly towards the Christians
